Desert: What You Need to Know Before You Head Out

5 min·21 August 2026

A desert safari with an experienced guide is safe. But knowing what to expect means you'll experience more and stay more relaxed. Here are the most important tips.

**Water — more than you think** The rule of thumb: at least 1 litre of water per hour in the desert. More in summer (36–42°C). We provide water, but bring your own bottle — well insulated ideally (warm water is hard to drink).

**Sun protection — take it seriously** In the desert there is no shade and UV radiation is extreme. Sunscreen SPF 50+ on all exposed areas, reapply every 90 minutes. Head covering is mandatory — no joke. A simple cotton kufiya (Arabic headscarf) protects better than a baseball cap.

**Clothing** Light-coloured long clothing is better in the desert than short dark clothing. Light colours reflect sunlight, long sleeves protect against sand and UV. Cotton is more comfortable than synthetics — perspiration works differently.

**Recognising heat exhaustion** Symptoms: dizziness, nausea, heavy sweating, headache. Move into shade immediately, drink water, elevate legs. Our guide is trained in first aid.

**Orientation in the desert** Without path markers, every dune looks like the next. Never leave the group or camp without letting someone know. GPS works, but without local knowledge it helps little.

**What belongs in your bag** Water, sunscreen, head covering, light scarf (against sand), sunglasses (category 3 or 4), power bank (heat drains batteries faster), small snacks.

**What does not belong in the desert** Perfume and scented body care products (attract insects), open sandals, dark cotton clothing on midsummer days.
