Every diver dreams of wrecks. The Red Sea offers some of the most spectacular wreck dives in the world — and the most famous one lies just a few hours from Hurghada.
**SS Thistlegorm — the queen of wrecks** The British cargo ship SS Thistlegorm was sunk by German bombers in 1941 and has lain at 30 metres depth near Sharm el-Sheikh ever since. On board: motorcycles, trucks, railway wagons, rifles, ammunition — all perfectly preserved by the salt water. Jacques Cousteau called it the best wreck in the world. For certified divers from Open Water level (with experience).
**Abu Nuhas — the reef of wrecks** The Abu Nuhas reef near Hurghada has claimed four wrecks: Chrisoula K., Giannis D., Carnatic and Kimon M. Each is different, each has its own character. Ideal for day trips from Hurghada.
*Carnatic* — Particularly impressive: the steamship from 1869 lies in two halves. Coral-covered, full of fish.
*Giannis D.* — The most photogenic wreck on the reef: largely intact, with many reef sharks and glassfish in the corridors.
**El Mina — the city wreck** Directly off Hurghada, the El Mina wreck lies at just 18–20 metres depth. Ideal for beginners and a perfect warm-up for deeper wrecks.
**Who is wreck diving suitable for?** For divers with an Open Water certificate and above. Some wrecks (SS Thistlegorm, interior passageways) require Advanced Open Water or specific wreck diving training. Our team is happy to advise you.
