The Nile cruise is one of the most iconic images of Egyptian tourism. But is it really worth it, and what awaits you on board?
**The classic route: Luxor – Aswan** Most Nile cruises sail between Luxor and Aswan (or vice versa) — around 220 kilometres on the Nile, taking 3 to 5 days. Along the way: temples, felucca boats, green riverbanks, villages, desert.
What you see on this route
*Luxor* — Start or end point. Valley of the Kings, Karnak, Luxor Temple.
*Edfu* — Temple of Horus, one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt. Built in 237 BC, it looks as if it was finished yesterday.
*Kom Ombo* — A double temple dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon god Horus. Right on the Nile — a dramatic setting at sunset.
*Aswan* — Nubian culture, Philae Temple on a Nile island, Aswan High Dam. Quieter, more colourful, less touristy than Luxor.
**Felucca instead of cruise ship** For something more authentic: a traditional felucca (sailing boat) for 1–3 nights between Aswan and Kom Ombo. Simple, slow, unforgettable. Sleep on deck under the stars.
**Is a Nile cruise worth it?** Yes — if you love temples and have time. As a day trip from Hurghada it is not feasible. Allow at least 4–5 days. The combination of Hurghada (sea) + Nile cruise (culture) is one of the best Egypt itineraries.
