Sea Turtles in the Red Sea: Where and When to See Them

4 min·26 June 2026

Watching a sea turtle underwater is one of the calmest, most beautiful experiences the Red Sea has to offer. They move slowly, gracefully and without the slightest fear.

Which species are found here?

*Loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta)* — The most common species in the Red Sea. Recognisable by its large head and brown shell.

*Green turtle (Chelonia mydas)* — Larger, greenish shell, feeds mainly on seagrass. Frequently found in shallower coastal waters.

**Where can you see them?** Turtles love seagrass meadows and calm reef areas. The best spots around Hurghada are: - Giftun Island — shallow reef areas with seagrass - Abu Ramada — known for regular turtle sightings - Dolphin House — turtles occasionally join the guests

**When is the best time?** Turtles are present in the Red Sea year-round. From May to October, females lay eggs at night on beaches of the Sinai Peninsula and the Egyptian coast. Morning tours have the highest sighting rate.

**How should you behave?** Keep your distance (at least 1–2 metres), never touch, no flash photography, do not swim between the turtle and the water surface (they need to breathe). Turtles that are stressed can panic and injure themselves.

**Why are they endangered?** Plastic waste (which they mistake for jellyfish), bycatch in fishing nets, destruction of nesting beaches. Every plastic bag avoided helps.
