Luxor is considered the world's largest open-air museum — and rightly so. If you only have one day, you need to prioritise. Our guide helps you get the most out of it.
The Route: What You Absolutely Must See
*Morning (arrival around 8 am)* Start with the Valley of the Kings on the west bank of the Nile. The morning cool makes the visit more pleasant, and you arrive early enough to avoid most tourist groups. Recommendation: at least three tombs, including Ramesses VI — impressive ceiling paintings!
*Temple of Hatshepsut* Just a few minutes away is the terraced temple of Egypt's only female pharaoh. Perfect for photos, dramatic against the surrounding rock faces.
*Lunch break* Cross the Nile by ferry or private motor boat (approx. €2), eat at one of the small restaurants on the east bank.
*Afternoon: Karnak Temple* Karnak Temple is the largest sacred building of antiquity. Just the Avenue of Sphinxes and the Great Hypostyle Hall make every visitor feel small. Allow at least 90 minutes.
*Tip from the guide* Don't buy an audio guide — a real local guide will explain more in two hours than you'd discover alone in three days.
