The camel has been the most important means of transport across the Sahara for millennia. For a rider from Europe, it is a completely new physical sensation — and one you will not forget.
**The camel: a brief overview** In Egypt you will find dromedaries (one hump), not Bactrian camels (two humps). Dromedaries can go weeks without water — the hump, however, does not store water but fat as an energy reserve.
Camels are wilful, intelligent animals. They can indeed spit — but mainly do so when stressed or mistreated. With our team, that doesn't happen.
**What happens when you mount?** Camels lie down to be mounted. This is a bumpy moment: first the back knee goes up, then the front knee. Hold the saddle horn firmly. The first ascent is always a little wobbly.
**What does the ride feel like?** A swaying, rocking motion — completely different from horses. The rhythm is gentle and even. After 10 minutes you get used to it, after 30 minutes you find it wonderful.
**Our routes** *Short route (1 hour):* Through the first dunes, short stop with a view, return. Ideal for first-timers and children. *Sunset route (2 hours):* To a viewpoint with a perfect desert sunset. With Bedouin tea at the destination.
**Tips for the ride** Wear long trousers (saddle friction), bring water, keep your camera accessible. No sandals — closed shoes are more comfortable.
