Egypt is one of the most photogenic countries in the world. A few insider tips will bring you home with images no postcard can replace.
On the water
*Dolphin House* Dolphins in crystal-clear water — photographed underwater with an underwater camera, this is a world-class subject. The early morning sun makes the light especially soft.
*Orange Bay* The turquoise water of Orange Bay and the white sand give perfect contrasts. Wide angle recommended.
In the desert
*Dunes at sunset* The sand dunes behind Hurghada at sunset — golden light, long shadows, dramatic silhouettes. The best shots come 20–30 minutes before sunset.
*Bedouin camp at night* Fire, stars, desert — here a tripod and long exposure time make for stunning star photography. Light pollution in the Sahara is minimal.
Trips to the surroundings
*Karnak Temple, Luxor* The Avenue of Sphinxes and the Hypostyle Hall in early morning light — photojournalistic quality. Tourist coaches haven't arrived yet in the early morning.
*Pyramids of Giza* The classic. Best light: sunrise (east side) and sunset (west side). Drones are prohibited, so use a wide-angle lens for the big picture.
*Nile ferry, Luxor* The simplest subject with the greatest impact: photograph the Nile from the ferry, feluccas in the foreground, temple in the background.
**Equipment tips** Underwater camera or waterproof phone case for snorkelling, polarising filter for water shots, tripod for night and desert.
