The Red Sea is one of the best places in the world to observe dolphins in the wild — and from Hurghada, the most famous spot is just 30 minutes away.
**Dolphin House — the best-known dolphin spot** The "Dolphin House" (also known as Sha'ab Abu Nuhas) is a reef system near Hurghada that hosts a permanent dolphin population. Spinner dolphins live here year-round — no guarantee, but a very high chance of sightings.
Which dolphin species live here?
*Spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris)* — The most common species in the Red Sea. Known for their spectacular leaps and spins (hence the name). Live in groups of 20 to over 100 animals.
*Bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus)* — The classic "Flipper" dolphin. Larger, often more curious about boats.
*Striped dolphin* — Rarer, but possible, especially in open water.
**When is the best time?** Early morning until around 10 am — dolphins are more active and swim closer to boats. At midday they often rest on the sea floor.
**How should you behave?** Don't jump towards dolphins, avoid sudden movements, keep your distance. A good provider will ensure this — dolphin stress is counterproductive. If dolphins spin and leap on their own initiative, that is a great sign.
**Can you swim with dolphins?** In the wild, this is possible — if the dolphins allow it. Enclosed "swim with dolphins" programmes in captivity are not something we recommend.
